EVERYDAY MATH

Your child learns math using our district-wide Everyday Math program, a hands-on approach created through the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project.  To quote the founders:  "This program is based on research and experience that shows that young children are capable of far more mathematics learning in kindergarten than was previously believed possible as long as the content is presented and explored in ways appropriate for children of kindergarten age."

Playful hands-on activities are basic to the program.  The children are not asked to do   abstract thinking before they have been given many concrete experiences. Worksheets are used infrequently. Discussion and creativity are welcomed. You will see your child become excited by a wealth of mathematics activities, including counting, numeration, measurement, geometry, patterns, data collecting, and calculator use. Classroom routines such as keeping track of the days of school on a number line, monitoring and graphing temperature and other weather conditions, and recording attendance all give children real-life opportunities to develop and refine a variety of mathematics skills.

Home Links are activity sheets sent home with your child for you to do together.  The goal is to apply math to everyday life and see its use in our home as well as school.  The activities are designed to be brief and fun using materials easily found in the home.
