Careers: Careers is a required course for all eighth grade students. This course is designed to introduce students to the wide variety of careers available to them. Students will research and plan for their career: They will learn about the job process including how to find and get a job, how to be successful on the job, how to meet their career goals, how to stay safe on the job, and how to manage their money. Students will analyze their interests, skills, values, aptitudes, and abilities using a career software package called Bridges.com which is accessed on the Internet. Bridges.com will allow students to research numerous career options as well as learn about decision-making and recreational opportunities as they relate to careers. Students will have a job shadow opportunity in this course.
Student Publications: In this course, students will learn how to create publications using the desktop publishing software Microsoft Publisher. Students will create a student newsletter publication as well as create a few pages for the Yearbook. Students will learn desktop publishing principles as well as learn how to create page layouts needed for a successful yearbook. In this course, students will also have the opportunity to create a CD cover as well as a T-shirt design. Students may have a field trip opportunity in this course.
Fun with Keyboarding: This course is designed for students who have enrolled in the River Valley School District after sixth grade and have not had a formal keyboarding course elsewhere. The course is also designed for students who would like to improve their speed and accuracy. Students enrolled in this course will review the keyboard as well as formatting used at the middle and high school levels. Students will also complete a short unit on multimedia using Microsoft PowerPoint as well as complete a short unit on the Internet.
Web Page Design and Multimedia: In this course, students will learn how to design a web page using current software. They will learn how to design page layouts as well as how to manipulate text, graphics, sound, and animation as it relates to a web page. The students will also work with multimedia presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint.
