2 JOURNAL ENTRIES (Individual Project)
One journal entry should be about being a steamboat cub pilot that Mark Twain might have written. Your journal entry should be at least ten sentences. Explain life on the boat and your job duties. Don’t forget that journal entries talk about your feelings and reactions about the situation you are dealing with. Your second journal entry needs to be after the fight between you (Twain) and Brown. Again, your journal entry should be at least ten sentences. Use the short story for ideas. Your two journal entries should be a dialogue with yourself about your experiences. |

DRAMATIC READING (Partner Project with Individual Component)
Partner Section: Prepare and deliver a dramatic reading of part of the story. The most appropriate selections would be conversations between Twain and Brown or conversations between Twain and the Captain. The selection you choose, should be long enough and include both partners equally. Your presentation should be well rehearsed and presented with enthusiasm. Use the tone, volume, and inflection of your voice to highlight changes in character or mood.
Individual Section: Take the short story selection you presented and write a response on how you would have handled the situation you chose if you were Twain, Brown, or the Captain. If you were Twain, what would you have done and why? If you were Brown, what would you have done and why? If you were the Captain, what would you have done and why? Your response should be at least ten sentences. |

Steamboat Flyer (Individual Project)
Create a job advertisement flyer that promotes and encourages people to work on steamboats for a career. Include a detailed job description and include duties that would be completed on the steamboat. Use the descriptions in the short story to help you get ideas. Your job description and duties write-up should be at least ten sentences. This flyer should have an artistic element to it (picture) and should be creative. The flyer should be completed on a piece of construction paper and should be in color. All writing must be legible and done in marker or ink. |

Talk Show Skit (Group of 3-4 Project with Individual Component)
Group Section: With your group, produce a talk show on the subject of fighting and conflict, featuring Mark Twain as a guest. The talk-show host should interview Twain and find out his views on fighting as a means of solving conflict. Use clues from the short story for Twain’s point of view on this issue. You can also interview other characters from the story, too. Each group member needs to have an equal part in your skit. Your talk show skit should be at least 3-4 minutes in length and your presentation should be well rehearsed and presented with enthusiasm. Be creative with this and have fun!
Individual Section: Each group member must handwrite their own copy of the script. No Xerox copies will be made, no multiple computer printouts either! In addition to this, you will have to grade each group member and give an explanation of the grade you gave them. |
