Policy #375 - Interscholastic Athletics

The interscholastic athletics program in the River Valley School District is recognized as an important part of the total educational program.  Specifically, interscholastic athletics:

 

a.   Provide opportunities for competition of the highly skilled with opponents of comparable skill.

 

b.   Provide activities that help to create school unity.

 

c.   Promote friendships both with teammates and opponents.

 

d.   Provide opportunities to exemplify and observe good sportsmanship.

 

e.   Teach students to make and accept decisions, discipline and responsibilities.

 

f.    Provide activities for learning self-discipline, loyalty, team play, personal pride, pride in the organization, respect for the rights of others, and the will to win.

 

g.   Provide a healthful, enjoyable experience whereby the emotional, mental, social and physical development of young people can be fully achieved.

 

Student participation in the interscholastic athletics program, however is a privilege and not a right.  Students shall have the opportunity to participate in the interscholastic athletics program only if they are willing to assume certain responsibilities.  Athletes must display high standards of behavior, exemplify good sportsmanship, show respect for others, and abide by all eligibility and training requirements established by the Board and administration.

 

The high school shall maintain membership in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) and shall abide by all WIAA rules and regulations.

 

The River Valley School District shall not discriminate in the opportunities provided for participation in athletic programs or activities, enforcing standards and rules of behavior, taking disciplinary actions or permitting facilities usage.  Discrimination complaints shall be processed in accordance with established procedures.
