Policy Statement
The River Valley School District recognizes the importance of healthy schools by supporting wellness, proper nutrition, and regular physical activity as part of the total learning environment. The District is committed to optimizing student performance potential by maintaining a healthy school environment.
The Child Nutrition and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Reauthorization Act of 2004 was passed by Congress in an effort to help combat the growing issue of childhood obesity. Poor nutrition and a sedentary lifestyle are associated with many health and learning consequences. Proper nutrition and physical activity are fundamentally important for helping children grow strong, succeed in school, and establish life long healthy habits.
· Students in grade pre-K through 12 will receive nutrition education, physical education, and health education that is consistent with state curriculum standards and guidelines.
· Wellness education will be made an integral part of the total school environment whenever possible.
Physical Activity
· The River Valley School District is committed to providing opportunities for physical activity throughout the school day. Opportunities include, but aren’t limited to, daily recess periods, regular instructional physical education, co-curricular activities, and the integration of physical activity into the academic curriculum.
