Language Arts

The language arts program in 5th grade includes the study of reading, spelling, writing, and language.

In reading class,  we work with strategies to help the student understand  written  material.  There is no basal textbook, but the curriculum has a   concentration on skills, and novel study is also a big part of the curriculum to help work on higher level thinking skills.  Our Daybook focuses on strategies to help the student become more active readers.

In spelling class, the students are exposed to varying letter combinations that produce sounds, and meanings of words that are  used in class work.  Also, a review of commonly misspelled words is done.

In writing class, communication skills are stressed;  in addition, students learn to use research skills to produce various  projects.  Students are asked to produce many types of writing; as well as many kinds of poetry.

Language class includes the study of grammar, the use of dictionaries, and other written resources, figurative language to help improve communication skills.  Listening and speaking skills are also stressed.
