EVERYDAY MATHEMATICS

The math curriculum in fifth grade makes use of children's interest in math, and the ways that math will be used when they become adults.

Students learn about number theory, estimation and computation, geometry exploration, division, fractions, decimals, and percents, addition and subtraction of fractions, exponents and negative numbers, ratios, coordinates, area, volume, and capacity, algebra concepts and skills, volume, probability, ratios, and rates.

Emphasis is not on computation, but on incorporating mathematics into everyday work and play, shaping students' ways of thinking about mathematics, and fostering mathematical understanding.   Hands-on, manipulative activities are a major component of the curriculum.
