| This letter is
being sent to Arena/ Plain Elementary parents in regards to policies and procedures for
children in the physical education class. Physical Education is
required by state standards and all students will be evaluated. The evaluation of
each student is based on: proper dress (including tennis shoes), active participation ,
attitude, behavior and ability-including daily skills, daily team play, and knowledge of
general rules of the activity. Participation: The state of Wisconsin requires that all children K through 12 actively participate in Physical Education. Therefore, all children must participate in all activities unless a medical excuse is given to the instructor or to the school nurse. Medical Excuses: If a child is to be excused from physical education class due to a minor illness, parents should send a note explaining the reason. Serious injuries/illnesses ( i.e. broken bones, or an illness requiring more than 3 absences from class) requires a note from the child's doctor. This procedure is required by law and the doctor will also provide a note permitting the child to return to class. A medical excuse used 14 times or more during any nine-week grading period will result in a grade of M/E (medical excuse) for that period. Preparedness for Class: Important to the child's
ability to participate in gym class is coming to class with the proper gym shoes and dress
for activity. Gym shoes are considered to be soft-soled, non marking tennis shoes
appropriate for physical education class. The safety of each child is the foremost
reason for this rule, No student will be allowed to participate without proper gym shoes.
