Climbing the Wall |
![]() |
As we begin a new year in the River Valley school District, students at the Arena Elementary school are "climbing the wall" - literally. Thanks to a brand new 10 foot high and 48 foot long climbing wall. The idea and design for the wall was completed by physical education instructor, Tim Coyle. (The effort to make the wall a reality is largely due to the generous support and donations of several individuals in the River Valley community.)
The wall covers most of the north wall of the Arena Elementary gymnasium. The wall is equipped with close to 300 colorful, funky and fun climbing rocks that test the student's limits of strength, flexibility and endurance. The challenge of wall climbing involves a traverse (horizontal not vertical ) climb across the face of the wall. Students are taught the proper and safe spotting techniques and the basic climbing terminology, which helps students communicate effectively with one another as they use the wall.
In the event of a tumble from the wall ( at most two feet) students are protected by 5 inches of landing and tumbling mats that are placed at the base and length of the wall.
Students naturally love the challenge climbing presents and are gaining an understanding and appreciation of a new sport.
A big "thank you" goes out to the following individuals who through generous donations of time, effort, materials and money helped make the climbing wall project a reality and a success. I appreciate their real desire and concern to give young people the opportunity to experience success.
All construction materials were donated by Rick Umhoefer of Umhoefer Do It Center. Jamie Licht the River Valley Technology Instructor supervised his high school technology students in preparing all of the construction materials for the wall. Kevin Armstrong gave his knowledge of construction and many hours of labors to erect the wall. Bob Liegel and Kevin Kraemer of Kraemer Brother, Inc. loaned the necessary power tools and application materials to construct the wall. Also, thanks to Jan Swenson, Dee Swenson, Charlie White, and Karen Coyle for their contributions and support.
And last, but not least, a thank you to Jamie Benson and Mike Richardson for their administrative support and direction.
The wall is truly an example of how the combined efforts and donations of individuals dedicated to the best for students can bring new and exciting opportunities for the children of the River Valley area.
