Description: French I is an introduction to a whole new and distinctively different culture. Students have the opportunity to learn and use basic conversation in a relaxed atmosphere. Class work includes pronunciation, short dialogues, as well as games, songs, videos, and a French magazine Allons-y. Cultural units on Paris, Napoleon, holidays, Versailles, The Tour de France, and French food are studied.

Description: In French II, more attention is given to developing reading and writing skills. Conversation, games, songs, and videos are included. Students review and continue their study of the language and its structures. Cultural units include holidays, French cheese, Impressionist art, The French Revolution, and castles. A French magazine, Bonjour is used at this level. A detective novel in French "Suivez La Piste" is read at the end of the year.

Description: In French III the student will continue to develop the four skills of language learning, with more emphasis on the speaking and writing skills. The French movie "Manon des Sources" is used and the student will read a mystery novel "Chemins Dangeureux", written entirely in French. Videos and listening activities with CD's are used. Impressionism and post-impressionism are studied as well as French history.

Description: The fourth year of French will include a thorough grammar review of the previous three years. There will be greater emphasis on oral fluency, in casual dialogue as well as oral reports. The two novels Le Petit Prince and Candide are read, as well as short stories. The movies "Camille Claudel" and “Madame Bovary” are part of the curriculum and a study of Auguste Rodin. A unit on the Middle Ages including architecture, painting and literature is covered also.

Description: In Spanish I, students will receive an introduction to the Spanish language. Students will learn the basic listening, reading, writing and conversational skills that compose the building blocks needed to further their Spanish language development in the subsequent classes. Students will learn basic grammar concepts and vocabulary in a unit based curriculum. Students will read two basic short novels completely in Spanish as well as complete various projects entirely in Spanish. Cultural units will include an introduction to Hispanic celebrations, family life, food, music and art.

Description: In Spanish II, students will continue the conversational and grammatical work of
Spanish I. Students will learn basic grammar concepts and vocabulary in a unit based curriculum focusing on reflexive verbs, direct and indirect objects, the irregular present tense and preterit tense. Students will read two basic short novels completely in Spanish as well as complete various projects entirely in Spanish. Cultural units will include a study of the South American rainforest, endangered animals, Spanish speaking countries differences in food and housing.

Description: In Spanish III, students will continue the conversational and grammatical work of Spanish II. There will be a review of grammatical structures already studied, as well as some more advanced concepts with an emphasis on oral fluency in a unit based curriculum focusing on the present, preterit, imperfect, future and conditional tenses. Students will read three basic short novels completely in Spanish as well as complete various written projects entirely in Spanish. Cultural units will include a study of the internet, child hood activities, hobbies and political beliefs. Students will continue their practice in listening comprehension by viewing the telenovela video series, En Busca De La Verdad.

Description: In Spanish IV, students will continue the conversational and grammatical work of Spanish III. There will be a review of grammatical structures already studied, as well as some more advanced concepts with an emphasis on oral fluency in a unit based curriculum focusing on the preterit, imperfect, future, conditional and compound tenses including the use of the present subjunctive and command forms. Students will read six short novels completely in Spanish as well as complete various written projects entirely in Spanish. Cultural units will include a study of famous Hispanic artists, working conditions and job opportunities for the future, traditional values for modern Hispanic society and basic history of Spain. Students will continue their practice in listening comprehension by viewing the telenovela video series, La Catrina.

Description: In Spanish V, students will continue the conversational and grammatical work of Spanish IV. There will be a review of grammatical structures already studied, as well as some more advanced concepts with an emphasis on oral fluency in a unit based curriculum focusing on the preterit, imperfect, future, conditional and compound tenses including the use of the present and past subjunctive tenses. Students will read authentic Hispanic literature from such authors as Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda, Julio Cortázar, Miguel de Unamuno, Ana María Matute, Gabriel García Márquez, Laura Esquivel, Federico García Lorca, Isabel Allende, Mario Vrgas Llosa, Claribel Alegría, Daisy Zamora, and Antonio Curis. Students will continue their practice in listening comprehension by viewing the telenovela video series, La Catrina, el último secreto.
