What is Occupational Therapy?

 

    Skills for the job of living... occupational therapy is interventions based on meaningful activities of daily life (self-care skills, education, work, or social interaction), especially to enable or encourage participation in such activities despite impairments or limitations in physical or mental functioning. . . .defined by the Eleventh Edition of Webster's Collegiate Dictionary 2003, as developed with American Occupational Therapy Association

School-based practice. . .

. . . during a school day a child's occupation is that of being a student

 . . . is governed by federal and state laws as related to special education service guidelines

 . . .a student can be referred for OT evaluations by teachers, parents, physician, and/or other IEP team members

 . . . intervention is provided in various academic settings individually or in small groups and is usually related to delays in fine motor, visual-motor, and sensory-motor skills

 . . . is a related service  in collaboration with various IEP team members

. . .admit, review, and dismissal is determined by IEP team members based on student performance/eligibility as reported by a school-based occupational therapist
