Classes are held 7th & 8th hours
All students will start the year with a math inventory to rate where they are at with their math abilities. After the initial inventory short reviews will be given in various areas based on the student's needs prior to starting our program of Impact Mathematics.
All sixth graders will be using Impact Mathematics. It is a program combining both traditional curriculums along with incorporating an active involvement on the part of students in making sense of important mathematical ideas. Basic skills and conceptual understanding will be taught to go hand in hand and support one another.
Impact Mathematics is both a comprehensive program, including number & operations, proportional reasoning, geometry, probability and data, as well as a program focused on the development algebraic thinking.
Impact mathematics does require more reading and writing than your child may be use to from their previous math experiences. Students will need to learn to read questions carefully as well as write out and fully explain answers.
Impact Mathematics is written to help students use and sharpen their own logical thinking and learn to be comfortable with abstractions that give mathematics its power. Students will be given the opportunity to develop their ideas and mathematical imaginations, as well as, acquire the skills that support their good thinking plus the ability to express their ideas clearly to others.
It is essential that all students are proficient with their basic multiplication facts. Multiplication facts play an important role with a student's math progression. Please remind your child to review their facts weekly. The more fluent students are with their facts the more successful students will be in class.
All students need to come to class prepared by having their assignment completed, text book as well as pencils, red pen and paper.
The following lessons and assignments may change throughout the week due to discussions and how students have progressed during the class. Assignments are posted daily in each math class and students need to be responsible to write in each assignment.
