Welcome to Second Grade!  I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year. I will usually send home a weekly newsletter on the last day of each school week. Please read it carefully to keep up with what is happening in our classroom and here at school. Announcements and some assignments will be included in most newsletters. If at any time during the year you have any questions, please feel free to write a note, stop by, or call School- 588-2559, Voicemail - 419, Home - 588-2339. For those with Internet access you can also email me at jhottmann@rvschools.org.

With our math program there is a Homelink assignment that reinforces what was taught in school. You can expect to see them frequently. Parents are encouraged to help their child if help is needed. Check over your child's work to see that it is completed correctly. I have found that homework is of tremendous value in helping the struggling student keep up with the class if the parents are involved. Homework is always due the day after it is assigned. Please sign your child's homework to show you have checked it over.

Assignments not completed during the school day may also be sent home to be completed. This is in addition to the regular homework. Of course Reading is to be practiced each evening. There will not always be a new assigned story.

Daily Folders

Each child should have 2 folders, a Stay at School Folder and a Homework Folder. The Homework Folder should come home every night and be returned every day. Notes from the school or classroom teacher can be found in the folder. Homework and/or unfinished work will also be included. Please check your child’s folder each night for notes and homework.  The Stay-At-School Folder or Daily Folder will be kept at school to be used for unfinished work that stays at school.

Friday Papers

At the end of each week your child will bring home the week’s work. Please look over your child’s papers so you can see your child's progress. This will also tell you where your child could benefit from extra practice at home. See the following note about selecting a special paper for Parent's Choice..

Parent's Choice   DD01186_1.WMF (8564 bytes)

Each week parents select a paper from the week’s work to be displayed in our classroom. I will send home a paper shape for you to attach to the paper. Write your child a note on the shape indicating why you selected that paper. You might choose it because of the coloring, neat handwriting, progress made, or whatever. Be sure to have your child return it on Monday or Tuesday of the next week. At the end of the year all the papers you have selected will be put in a portfolio for you to keep and look at to see your child’s progress in second grade.

Absences   HH00443_.WMF (3298 bytes)

When your child is absent the work may be sent home with a sibling or picked up in the office if requested. Work should be returned the day your child returns to school even if it is not completed. Sometimes long absences need extra time to complete the work.

Book Orders

When you visit our classroom, you will notice that we have hundreds of books for the children to read. Many of these books have come from book clubs: Scholastic, Trumpet, Carnival and others. These clubs offer books at very good prices for the children's home library.  If your child likes to read, the book orders provide quality literature at a great price.

Every month I will send home one or several of these book club order forms. The order forms will be stapled together with a due date. I also may mention one or more books that I recommend for your children. You are welcome to order some or none at all each month. When you place an order, it gives me bonus points which I use to obtain additional books for the classroom for free.

When ordering, please make out a check payable to the book club.

If you want to order a book as a surprise gift for your child, include a note with your order. I will hold the book aside and call you, letting you know that it's in and you can pick it up at your convenience.

Birthdays and Holidays  SO00152_.WMF (31360 bytes)

If your child would like to celebrate a birthday with the class he/she may bring a class treat to share. Please make healthy choices for snacks. Students with summer birthdays may bring a treat t celebrate his/her "half birthday." Sometimes students or myself have brought treats "Just Because!" Individual servings are easiest to handle at school.

We celebrate some holidays or special days with small parties. Last year instead of having many treats on the celebration day I asked that students bring in treats the week of the holiday. We enjoyed the treats with our milk/juice. Tentatively our parties include: Christmas, Valentine’s, and End of the Year. Instead of Christmas gift exchange, we ask the students to contribute nonperishable food items for the local Food Pantry. More information will follow about this.

Penmanship

Second grade is a year of transition from manuscript writing (printing) to cursive writing. I begin to teach the cursive alphabet after Christmas vacation. Until that time all students will be writing using the manuscript alphabet. Cursive writing is introduced in 2nd grade and mastered in 3rd grade.
