Reading
Second Grade reading consists of literature books as well as tradebooks. All reading books must be returned each day. During Guided Reading we will focus on comprehension skills-- those strategies that help readers make sense out of the print on the page. We also work on our reading fluency -- the smoothness with which we read text. I will direct a lesson about a particular story with all of the students. Students will then practice reading independently, in pairs, or small groups. Then we will discuss what we have learned. Students will get a great deal of support from teacher and classmates and will work toward becoming independent readers. A yellow reading slip will be sent home each Monday. Please have your child read for 15 minutes each night. Return the signed reading slip to school each day. I consider nightly reading part of your child's homework. Returning the reading slip is training in responsibility.
