Word Wall
In phonics children learn to read and spell high-frequency words and learn the patterns which allow them to decode and spell lots of words. This block allows students to explore words, word families (patterns), spelling, and phonics. They will see how they can use what they learn about words in their reading and writing. The first part of this block is usually given to studying the Word Wall words. These words will be on display on our wall all year for students to use as a resource. Five words are added to the Word Wall each week. During the second part of the block word families, endings, and prefixes, will be explored. We'll do such activities as Rounding Up Rhymes and Making Words. Words are practiced and tested in list form as well as in dictated sentences. Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation will be evaluated in these sentences. Forms of the given word will also be included. For example, if the list word is "walk" I may have your child spell "walked" or "talk". Spelling tests will be given on Thursdays unless otherwise noted.
