Course Descriptions:

Each course offered in 8th grade Technology Education is 9 weeks in length.

Transportation Systems:      During this course, students will work on projects and assignments directly related to the areas of transportation.  Some of these projects and assignments will include:  model rocketry, aerospace development ( building a balsa glider), designing land vehicles to conquer obstacles, and researching transportation topics.

Construction:       Students will use their engineering skills to design structures using both the drawing board and computer-aided drawing (C.A.D.) software.    After the design process is finished, students will build and test their structures to evaluate their engineering and building skills.  Some of the projects and assignments in this course include:  drawing a house floorplan, building a scale model house, and designing, building, and testing a bridge for structural strength.

Manufacturing:     In this course,   students will design, draw, and build projects related to the manufacturing industry.  The materials students will work with are plastics, wood, and sheet metal.   Students will use C.A.D software to design projects and evaluate their designs.   During this course, students will use tools and machines used in industry to manufacture raw materials into a useable product.  Some of the projects and assignments in this course include:  measurement, shop safety, traditional mechanical drawing, C.A.D., woodworking project, sheet metal fabrication, and plastic processes.

Communications and Design:    This course is designed to capture the creativity of students and use it to engineer new products.  For example,  students will be asked to build a robot that functions for a specific purpose using the parts supplied to them.  This course will also include lab activities in the areas of:  laser, C.A.D., electronics, video production, and computer graphics.  Students will also organize and operate a company that will mass-produce a product using the tools and machines in the manufacturing area.
