Literacy Centers

Literacy Centers in second grade may be used throughout the year to help build independent language art skills.  The centers include the following areas:  reading, writing, poetry, listening, and spelling.   Each week the students will rotate independently in groups of three or four into each of the five centers.    Literacy Centers allow the children to develop their language art skills at his/her own level.

Reading - This center usually includes reading a variety of books independently or in groups, alphabetizing, making words, and other related reading activities.turning_pages.gif (20692 bytes)

Writing - Each week the children will practice their creative writing skills using many different themes.  We often try to correlate the themes to the seasons and holidays. The children are often given words to get ideas to write about.  Hopefully, this center will give them time to come up with ideas for stories just for fun and practice their handwriting skills.

Spelling - Each week the children are given new spelling words to study.  This literacy center allows them more time to practice spelling the words by writing them in sentences and other activities.
