School Nurses and Healthy Kids Go Together
School Nurses are Registered Professional Nurses responsible for protecting and promoting the health of all students.
They have obligations to students, parents, school staff, community, and their nursing profession.
Their goal: To maximize each student's potential to learn and grow by providing the best possible health care and ensure healthy learning environments.
Activities at school:
**Conduct health screenings: vision, hearing, dental
**Provide nursing assessments for growth, health and development
**Provide emergency first aid
**Provide CPR/First Aid training for school staff
**Implement and monitor Code Blue Teams to address emergencies
**Provide inservice to staff for special health care procedures
**Assess, monitor and refer students with communicable diseases
**Provide health counseling to students and staff regarding chronic
illness, nutrition, disease prevention and
positive
lifestyles
**Is a resource for health issues and health education
**Assist teachers with Health Curriculum
**Collaborate with Special Education services
**Develop and implement Individualized Health Plans
**Interpret medical data for teachers and parents
**Implement and monitor student's compliance with immunization laws
**Assist in maintaining a safe school environment
**Participates as a Pupil Services team member
**Active member of the Crisis Intervention team
**Member of the Human Growth and Development Committee
**Monitor and supervise medication administration
Activities related to home:
Act as a liaison between home and school regarding health concerns
Monitor long term illnesses of students
Obtain pertinent health histories
Activities related to community:
Act as liaison between home, school, and community resources
Act as a liaison between health care provider and schools
Network with community agencies in making referrals as needed
