Math

In fourth grade Math we have worked on the correlation between fractions, decimals, and percents.  Students are learning some "easy facts" that involve fractional parts that are often used in our daily lives.  Calculating sale prices and finding the best buys will be a lifelong skill.  In April students will work on dividing and multiplying with decimals.  Our books have many interesting assignments using factual information from the world.

Each unit will have sections that are meant to be "beginning", "developing", and "secure".   Every item is not meant to be mastered by everyone.  This does not mean that basic math facts are not expected to be learned.  I expect all students to know the addition/subtraction facts and the multiplication/division facts.

We have a little math practice each day at the beginning of the school day.  BSA means "beginning school activity."  You will see these stapled sheets in the students' take home folder each week.

We try to spend at least 15 minutes each day doing adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing problems on our slate boards. We also review the lesson from the day before at the beginning of class.  Everyday Math is a series that tries to give students real life situations to see the uses of Math.  We have a resource book that has up to date information on world and country populations and facts about special places like Washington D.C.
