Principles of Engineering Class   -   POE

1.0  credit               2  Semesters                36  Weeks

Students are using sketching and technical writing to solve problems.   Students will learn the Design Process of modeling, testing and evaluation.

Students will be working with mechanisms and simple machines in their lab work.    Students will use levers, gears, wheels, etc. to build simple machines.

Students will be working with thermodynamics and forms of energy.   Students will work with fluid systems, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic systems.

Students will work with electrical systems, metering devices, motors and generators.   Students will work with statics and strength of materials.   Students will do work with materials and materials testing in engineering.

Students will learn the following basic principles and skills:

1.    Careers in Engineering
2.    Sketching and technical writing
3.    Design process, Inventor 2009 software, testing and evaluation
4.    Mechanisms and simple machines
5.    Thermodynamics and Forms of Energy
6.    Fluid systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
7.    Electrical systems, Ohm's law and motors and generators
8.    Statics and Strength of Materials such as forces, vectors, stress, etc.
9.    Materials / materials testing in Engineering for metals, alloys, nonmetals, composites, etc.
10.  Engineering for Reliability such as failure rates, risk analysis, and factors of safety
11.  Kinematics for linear motion, velocity, acceleration, and trajectory motion
