The RVHS Ski team was first organized in autumn 1999 to compete in the 99/00 season. Dick Cates served as the Head Coach, Jean Alt as the Faculty Advisor, and Melissa Pronold as assistant coach. During the first years of the team, Justin Caraway and Jamie Johnson also served some of the years as assistant coaches.

Since its inception, the boys team has qualified for the WI State HS Ski Championships every year.

Eric Cates, RV '03, won the Southern Conference Individual Championship in 2002 and 2003, and was runner up in 2001. He won the WI state GS and was runner-up in State Overall competition in 2002, and won both the Super G and the Overall competition at State in 2003. He is presently a member of the Dartmouth College Varsity Ski Team, the top NCAA Division I collegiate alpine ski team in the nation. A member of the Dartmouth ski team has won the NCAA National Slalom title for the past four years in a row.

Each year an RVHS student member of the Ski Racing Club who “demonstrates outstanding leadership, dedication, and love for the sport of skiing” has their name added to a plaque, in the memory of David Allen Johnson. Click here to read more details about this award and the past winners.
