Slalom

Slalom ski racing tests the skier's sense of balance, speed and agility while zigzagging through dozens of quick turns. The event requires competitors to make quick turns in succession over a period of about one-minute by skiing back and forth through all the gates. The gates in slalom are formed by alternating pairs of red and blue poles set in a rhythmic pattern down the hill.

GS

The giant slalom has a longer course and wider gates than the Slalom. Skiers must race through breakaway poles with wide, sweeping turns. The Giant Slalom tests the skier's strength, technique and ability to choose the fastest line down the course. The gates for the giant slalom use two pairs of alternating red and blue poles set to conform to the terrain.
