AMERICAN ETHNIC STUDIES: CREDIT:
1/2 DESCRIPTION: American Ethnic Studies is the study of race, ethnicity, and religion matters in U.S. society. The goal of this course is to widen student understanding of American experiences unlike their own, develop methods of looking at America from different perspectives, and argue opinions from multiple views on a current issue involving race, ethnicity, religion, and/or politics. Debate topics will draw from past and current American cultural icons from great thinkers of yesterday like W.E.B. Du Bois to today’s cross-culture phenomenons like Eminem. Taught mainly with Socratic method, students are expected approach ethnicity questions from a wide array of academic disciplines including logic, rhetoric, philosophy, sociology, psychology and political science. Students that aspire for careers in services would greatly benefit from this course (i.e. teachers, social work, health care, police officers, military, and the like).
