Algebra  Mrs. Briehl
FACTORING A PERFECT SQUARE TRINOMIAL  Discuss factoring the perfect square trinomials. (a + b)^{2 }= (a + b)(a + b) = a^{2 }+ 2ab + b^{2 } (a  b)^{2 }= (a  b)(a + b). Remember that we take 2 times ab to get the middle term. x^{2 } 12x + 36 = since 2 x 6 = 12 then we have (x  6)^{2 }in factored form. x^{2 }+ 6x + 9 = (x + 3)^{2 }
You are building a square patio. The area of the patio is 16 m^{2 } 72m + 81. What is the length of one side of the patio?
FACTORING A DIFFERENCE OF TWO SQUARES z^{2 } 9 = (z^{2 } 3^{2}) = (z + 3)(z  3) v^{2}  100 and x^{2 } 16 16x^{2 } 81 = (4x)^{2 } (9)^{2 }= (4x  9)(4x + 9) 25c^{2 } 64 = (5x  8)(5x + 8)
FACTORING OUT A COMMON FACTOR FIRST 24g^{2 } 6 = 6(4g^{2 } 1) = 6(2g  1)(2g + 1) 12t^{2 } 48 and 12x^{2 }+ 12x + 3
Assignment: Pg. 527  528 (10  38 evens; 40  50 evens)
