Science Grade

Your child's science grade is determined by the following:

50% - Tests/Quizzes

25% - Assignments

15% - Investigative Journal

10% - Responsibility

Tests are given following the conclusion of each unit.  Quizzes are frequent - usually 2-3 per week.  Students do know when they will have a quiz - they are NOT surprise quizzes!

There are a variety of assignments given throughout the year.  The 'paper/pencil' worksheets are designed to provide practice and reinforcement of skills and/or information that is presented in class.  'Paper/pencil' assignments are generally due the following day.  There are other types of assignments that are 'long term' assignments.  Examples include various measuring activities, computer/Internet assignments and a Power Point display.  Students usually have 4-6 weeks to work on these projects.  Another assignment is called 'Current Science'. For the CS assignment, students give a 'report/speech' to the class about a  science topic from the newspaper.  Students have a week to prepare their 'speech'.

The purpose of the Investigative Journal is to provide students 'formal' opportunities to use the Scientific Method process and practice the skills associated with the SM..  The first semester will basically be a series of weekly observations about various topics.  The second semester, the IJ will be used to develop a 'virtual' science fair project.

Each student has ten 'responsibility points' per week.  Point(s) are subtracted for the following behaviors:  NOT having the assignment, NOT bringing needed supplies to class, NOT reporting for a 'scheduled' noon, NOT reporting to pick up assignments after an absence and being tardy to class.
